Utility CAD/GIS Designer

Position Summary

The primary responsibility of the Utility CAD/GIS Designer is to support the project managers and engineers with preparation of construction documents, capital improvement plans, schematics, one-line diagrams, maps, and staking plans.

Duties & Responsibilities

Job requirements include, but are not limited to, the following:

Prepare design drawings, including site, plan, profiles, details, sections, and bill of materials per engineer sketches, mark-ups, and/or detailed verbal instructions.

Perform various electrical project designs including substation plan layouts, section cuts, physical details, ground grid design, lightning design and other physical substation components.

Follow all company, client and project design and drafting standards.

Perform drawing, planning, development and production work including problem analysis, design layout and calculations on non-routine assignments of substantial variety and complexity.

Perform a variety of assignments using prescribed methods and standard techniques including drawing sequence and presentation, sizing various system components and refining rough sketches.

Perform production of design drawings within scope, budget and schedule. Perform project tasks and assignments within budgeted hours and deadlines.

Compute volume calculations for conduit, lightning, grounding designs under the direction of the engineer.

Maintain and create system maps, capital improvement plans, and utility construction plans.

Develop, measure, and distribute survey and aerial mapping datasets.

Manage, organize, and maintain geospatial datasets, ensuring accuracy and accessibility for project stakeholders.

Support data management and archival strategies to ensure long-term accessibility and security.

Responsible for the drafting/GIS QA/QC process.

Further develop, implement, and deploy CAD/ESRI standards.

All other duties as assigned.

Key Competencies

Understanding of design software such as: AutoCAD, MicroStation, ESRI ArcGIS and Excel to develop the design deliverables. Ability to learn and effectively utilize new design software programs.

Ability to utilize both 2D and 3D applications to prepare engineering drawings.

Solid understanding of AutoCAD/AutoCAD Electric (and corresponding suite of AutoCAD products) and its applications and practices.

Problem solving and critical thinking skills.

Experience in coordinating CAD files, improving workflow, and troubleshooting.

Knowledge of drafting and GIS principles.

Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and e-mail tools.

Education & Experience

Requires a degree in Drafting, Construction Management, or a related field.

Has relevant work experience in the construction industry.

Must be accurate and accountable in completing assigned tasks.

Must be organized and have the ability to multi-task.

Must have good technical skills.

Must be able to work independently, as well as working with a team.

Professionalism in dealing with customers, owners, vendors, and co-workers.

Motivation to continually learn while maintaining a positive attitude.

Excellent written & verbal communication skills.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.

Ability to manage multiple projects with conflicting deadlines.
